The paper sent to de-inking is often laminated or contains fillers (such as calcium carbonate) which requires the addition of large amounts of damaging chemicals to remove. In addition, newsprint often contains fibres that were not sufficiently softened when first processed so further chemicals (such as sodium hydroxide) need to be added. There is no recovery of the chemicals used in de-inking.
