A. Kimberly-Clark Australia uses recycled materials wherever they are the most appropriate choice.
Using recycled fibre in toilet tissue does not make it 'environmentally friendly'.
Making recycled fibres suitable for tissue involves removing the ink & cleaning the fibres requiring large amounts of chemicals & energy which have their own environmental consequences.
Making 1 tonne of recycled product produces up to 1 tonne of wet sludge (30% solids) which can end up in landfill.
A. Kimberly-Clark Australia, in a world's first, invented the technique of oxygen-bleaching at our Tantanoola mill. This process is now used in all of our mills.
Water and oxygen combines to form hydrogen peroxide which bleaches the fibres without any adverse environmental impacts. This process generates negligible levels of by-products and is similar to the natural breakdown of wood in the forest with air & water.
Oxygen bleaching uses hydrogen peroxide, which is basically water & oxygen, to bleach fibres. This has no adverse impacts for the environment.
A.The total amount of Kimberly-Clark Australia's solid waste ending up in landfill is around 5 percent.
The Millicent facility generates 92 percent of the total amount of Kimberly-Clark Australia's solid waste but thanks to an arrangement with Van Schaik Bio-gro, a local fertilizer manufacturer, this is being turned into a highly useful fertiliser.
Only 0.3 percent of Millicent's solid waste ends up in land fill.
The mill's waste oil is also being collected and reused by a local manufacturer in another great environmental initiative.
The total amount of Kimberly-Clark Australia's solid waste ending up in landfill is around 5 percent.
